At the age of 20 I went to London and won the Mr Universe contest as the youngest Mr Universe ever. It was because I had a goal. If you dont have a goal of where you are going you drift around and you never end up anywhere.
The majority of people dont like what they are doing. because they are really not doing it because they didnt have a goal and found this goal.
They just aimlessly drift around and all the sudden there is a job opening and so they get the job.
So people always ask me, "why is it that you work so hard and you always have a smile on your face? Others work just as hard as you do but they look sour in the face."
I told people all the time that it is because to me I am shooting for a goal. In front of me is the Mr Universe title.
So every rep that I do gets me closer to accomplishing that goal to make this vision a reality. Every set that i do, every repetition gets me closer to getting this goal into reality.
So I couldnt wait to do another 500 pound squats, I couldnt wait to do another 500 pound bench press. I couldnt wait to do another 2000 reps of sit-ups. I couldnt wait for the next exercise.
Plan B,Work your ass off,全力以赴。
I hate plan B and i will tell you why.
Because we have so many doubters (the no sayers) and people people who say you cant do it, thats impossible etc.
That is okay because we just turn off our ears to them and let the no be a yes and tell yourself you can do it.
It is possible to do that with all the negative people around you. But when you start doubting yourself that is very dangerous. Because now what you are basically saying is that if my plan does not work i have a fall back plan, a plan B.
Plan B
That means you start thinking about plan B and every thought that you put into plan B you are taking away that energy from plan A. It is very important to understand that we function better if there is no safety net. Because plan B becomes a safety net. It says that "if I fail and fall then ill get picked up and have something that will protect me."
That is not good. Because people perform better when there is no safety net. I have never had a plan B. I made a full commitment that I was going to be body building champion, I made a full commitment that I was going to be in America. I made a full commitment that I was going to be in show business and I was going to be the leading man. No matter what it takes I will do the work over and over until i get it.
For me its very dangerous to have a plan B because you are cutting yourself off from the chance of really succeeding. The reason people want to have a plan B is because they are worried about failing. "What if I fail then I dont have anything else."
We all fail, its okay. What is not okay is staying down after you fail. Whoever stays down is a loser. Winners fail and get up. you always get up, that is a winner.
I failed in body building. I lost body building competitions, I lost power lifting competitions, I lost weightlifting competitions. I had movies that went to the toilet because they were terrible and got the worst reviews. In politics i remember i had many of the initiatives on the ballot and we lost. My approval rating in Carlifornia went down to 28%. And then it went back up again and I won the governorship.
成功没有魔法,要全力以赴,Work your ass off。
So you cant get around the hard work it does not matter who you are. Work your ass off. there is no magic pill. There is no magic out there.
And it drives me crazy when people say they dont have enough time to go to the gym for 45 minutes a day to workout. Or to do something for 45 minutes to an hour a day to improve.
I went to college, I went and worked out 5 hours a day and I was working in construction because in those days there was no money. I didnt have money for food supplements or anything so I had to go to work.
From 8 oclock to 12 midnight i went to acting class four times a week. So I did all that. There wasnt one single minute that I wasted.
And I slept on couch, after couch, after couch, after couch at friends’ apartments in New York. Until I wore out the rent paying roommates’ welcome.
I dusted pianos at a piano store and let those streak for five months. I worked on the property of a Shakespeare scholar for a year pulling weeds and removing bees’ nests.
And then finally, after two years of job and couch surfing, I got a job in application processing. As a data enterer at a place called Professional Examination Services. And I stayed for six years. Six years! Longer than my time at Bennington.
When I was 29, I told myself the next acting job I get no matter what it pays, I will from now on, for better or worse, be a working actor. So I quit my position at the Professional Examination Services.
You just get a bit derailed. But soon something starts to happen. Trust me. A rhythm sets in. Just like it did after your first few days here. Just try not to wait until like me, you’re 29 before you find it. And if you are, that’s fine too. Some of us never find it. But you will, I promise you. You are already here. That’s such an enormous step all its own. You’ll find your rhythm, or continue the one you have already found.
I waited a long time out in the world before I gave myself permission to fail. Please, don’t even bother asking, don’t bother telling the world you are ready. Show it. Do it.
What did Beckett say? “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.”
No Plan B,Work your ass off。
就像彼特·丁拉基说的,Ever tried, Ever failed, No matter, Try Again, Fail again, Fail better。
